A distinguished naval leader with over four decades of exemplary service in the Indian Navy, he served as the 25th Chief of the Naval Staff, demonstrating exceptional leadership across operational, strategic, and training appointments. His illustrious naval career reflects deep expertise in maritime security, defence strategy, and national security affairs.
A specialist in gunnery and missile systems, he has commanded several frontline warships, including aircraft carrier INS Viraat, INS Ranvir, INS Kora, and INS Nishank. Over the years, he held numerous prestigious appointments such as Flag Officer Commanding Western Fleet, Chief of Integrated Defence Staff, Commandant of Naval War College, and Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command.
An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, the United States Naval War College, and the Royal College of Defence Studies, he has consistently contributed towards strengthening India’s maritime capabilities and strategic outlook. He has also represented India in various international military and strategic engagements, further enhancing India’s global naval cooperation.
In recognition of his distinguished service of the highest order, he was awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), along with the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) and Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM).

A former Army Commander with over four decades of distinguished service in the Indian Army. His career spans a wide spectrum of operational, strategic, and training assignments, reflecting exceptional leadership and depth of experience.
A combat aviator and an accomplished public speaker, he has a deep and enduring interest in strategic and military affairs. He has authored more than 100 articles published in reputed journals and leading dailies. Additionally, he has actively contributed to the global discourse through participation in approximately 500 lectures, seminars, and events, both in India and internationally.
In recognition of his exceptional service of the highest order, he was awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM) on Republic Day 2021.
The Hon’ble President of India appointed him as a Member of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) with effect from 18th July 2022.
He is also a Distinguished Fellow at the Centre for Land Warfare Studies (CLAWS) and serves as a member of the Governing Council of the India Foundation.
